Our School
Daily Rhythms
Morning Meeting
The school day begins with a whole school meeting, and parents are welcome to join. Meetings will take different forms: an assembly to listen to a guest speaker, artist, or musician who complements a curriculum topic; the sharing of project work from chosen classrooms; a moment of silence; or a prompt to inspire the children. Whatever the topic, the goal of morning meeting is to bring the community together with a positive intention or reflection, or to spark curiosity. It is a place to connect as a whole community before breaking off into smaller sessions.
Project Work
Each class has their own group meeting which sets the tone for learning and discovery for the day. After this, children move onto group or one-on-one work, based on their interests and project work. Teachers set out provocations, which are open-ended activities intended to expand on the children's prior work by stimulating imagination and ideas. Projects can be big or small and last weeks or months.
Outside Time
Each classroom has recess in the morning and afternoon. This time is viewed as an enriching extension of learning, not a break in education. Environmental education, movement, play, and social-emotional learning are just a few of the benefits intentionally incorporated into outside time.
Specialties
Specialty classes introduce children to a broad range of experiences, sparking curiosity and bringing to light new realms of learning. Weekly specialty classes include studio art, music, theater, physical education, global studies, and service projects. More specialty classes are offered on a rotating basis, such as baking, carpentry, orienteering, and gardening.
Closing Meeting
At the end of the day, classrooms hold a closing group meeting where students have the opportunity to reflect on something that occurred during the day. Students may share a sample of their work, or teachers may showcase an "ah-ha" moment.
